• Packing: Organize your packing based on where you want your items to go in your new home. Think about how you want furniture to be arranged in your new home and tag items so you know exactly where to put them on move in day. Properly labeling and grouping your items will save you time and energy.
  • Reserve the elevators: If you are moving out of or into a multi-unit building, you'll probably need to schedule your move in with the building's management. Many condo buildings require you to reserve the freight elevator for your move. Also ask management about moving rules as there may be fees if building maintenance needs to oversee your move.
  • Schedule repair or renovation: Before you move your furniture into your new home, take care of any repairs or handy work that needs to be done. Paint that room or seal those new floors before bringing in your items.
  • Update services: Make sure your electricity, internet access and other services are ready to go in your new home when you arrive. Be sure to contact your utility company and other providers ahead of your move to transfer your services to your new address.
  • Moving with pets: If you are moving far, you will need to make arrangements for transporting your pets if you do not plan on traveling with them. Every airline has unique rules for traveling with pets, and nearly every state has individual laws on the entry of animals, so research these ahead of time to prevent quarantines.
